Subject Choice and Career Pathing: A Guide for Grade 9 Learners
For many learners, Grade 9 marks an important milestone in their school journey. It is the year where you begin making decisions about the subjects you will complete from Grade 10 to Grade 12. These choices are more than just selecting classes — they are the first steps toward shaping your future career and study opportunities.
While it may feel overwhelming, understanding how subject choices connect to future careers can help you make confident and informed decisions.

Why Your Grade 9 Subject Choices Matter
The subjects you choose at the end of Grade 9 will determine the options available to you in the Further Education and Training (FET) phase from Grade 10 to Grade 12. These subjects also influence the courses you may qualify for at universities, colleges, or other training institutions after school.
If certain subjects are not included in your combination, you may find it difficult to enter specific fields of study later on. That is why it is important to think about your interests, strengths, and possible career goals before making your final selections.

Understanding Your Subject Options
In South Africa, learners working toward their National Senior Certificate must study seven subjects in total:
Four compulsory subjects
These subjects are required for all learners:
- Home Language
- First Additional Language
- Life Orientation

These are the subjects you choose based on your interests and possible career path. Schools may offer different options, but common elective subjects include:

5 Tips for Choosing the Right Subjects
1. Think About Your Interests
Choose subjects that genuinely interest you. When you enjoy a subject, you are more likely to stay motivated and perform well.
2. Consider Your Strengths
Look at the subjects where you have achieved strong marks in Grades 7–9. These strengths can guide your subject choices.
3. Research Career Requirements
If you already have a career in mind, research which subjects are required for that profession or tertiary programme.
4. Keep Your Options Open
If you are unsure about your future career, choose subjects that provide flexibility. Subjects like Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Business Studies can open many pathways.
5. Ask for Guidance
You don’t have to make this decision alone. Speak to your teachers, parents, school counsellors, or career advisors for advice and guidance. At The Aleit Academy we believe in guidance and our faculty is always ready to meet and discuss the possibility in the Events and Hospitality Industry.
In order to study at The Aleit Academy you do not require any specific subjects but you do require a National Senior Certificate (NSC), equivalent (APS score 19-23) or higher-level certificate (GED or IEB).
